Another one of the presentations was from Trisha Cortez from the Rio Grande International Study Center. She presented several facts stating that on average each year, Laredo uses about 120 million plastic bags, and that the city spends about $340,000 yearly on street cleanups and about $150,000 to clean landfills.
Also discussed, were the details of the ordinance such as only partially banning plastic bags, for example meat markets can still use plastic bags , as well as dry cleaners and fast food restaurants. The ordinance will allow a grace period to stores/business in order to give them and the shoppers time to adapt to this new way of living. Stores and businesses will be allowed to charge for plastic bags and for cloth bags. The ordinance will be approved and will be sent for final approval.
